Newsletter Update 9/22/17

Math
We assessed Unit 1 in math this week and the class did really well! We started Unit 2 and learned how to play an Exchange Game with $1 bills, $10 bills, and $100 bills. Look for information on Unit 2 in the Friday folder!

Reading
In reading this week, we focused on Word Study procedures and objectives. We learned how to sort words based on their patterns and how to practice our words in new ways.

Theme
We are doing a unit on health in theme. We learned that the body has different organs that have special functions. This week, students learned about the lungs, their function, and how to keep them healthy. They even made their own lung model! We started on the brain and will continue next week.

Writing

In writing, we learned about how good authors come up with an idea and plan out their story first. We are focusing on narrative writing in our first unit, or small moment stories about ourselves.

Updates from Our Classroom This Week

Reminders
Fundraiser order forms are due on Tuesday, September 12th! Thank you for all your help raising money for our school!

Math
In math this week, our focus was making combinations of ten. We learned how to play Fishing for 10, which is similar to Go Fish. Playing this game at home can help your child become more efficient with knowing these combinations and using them to solve problems in later units.

Reading

In reading, one of our objectives was to continue building our independent reading stamina. It’s gone from 5 minutes at the beginning of the year to 11 minutes now! We were also practicing how to keep track of our reading in a reading log and how to set long term and short term goals for ourselves as readers.

Writing

We have been working very hard on a class writing project. We used a mentor text, Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon, and identified character traits and descriptive language we could use to write about her. We practiced how to ask a partner questions and wrote our own poems to get to know each other. Each student will have a chance to take it home and share it with their family!

Homework

Homework will be starting on Monday, September 11th. The first week will just be a reading log, where students keep track of the reading they do at home. The next week, I will begin to add a bit of math practice and spelling words related to what we have done in class. Homework will always be given on Monday and will be due on Friday, so students are able to use the week to manage their time.

Our classroom still needs a Room Parent Coordinator for this year!

As RPC, your main role would be to ensure that each classroom party is filled with food and fun. You can do this by enlisting other parents to help you provide food, games and crafts.

All Classroom Parties are from 2:15-3
Fall Party: Friday, October 27
Winter Party: Thursday, December 21
Valentine Party: Friday, February 9

You can find the link to sign up via the PTA Paxton Keeley Facebook page!
